Newcastle United reportedly have no plans to let Sean Longstaff leave St James’ Park on the cheap.
According to a report from the Press Association (via Independent), Newcastle are set to demand over £20 million for Sean Longstaff as Manchester United plot their first bid for the youngster.
Longstaff is attracting attention after a brilliant run of form around the turn of the year. He broke into Rafa Benitez’s first-team at St James’ Park and formed a superb partnership with Isaac Hayden before his season ended prematurely due to injury.
Press Association (via Independent) reports that Manchester United are expected to make a bid for the 21-year-old before the weekend, and that is expected to be rejected by the Magpies.
The report adds that Newcastle will want over £20 million for Longstaff, who signed a four-year deal on Tyneside in December. That, of course, leaves Benitez’s men in a strong position as they look to hold onto their brightest prospect.
It will be interesting to see whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has any interest in meeting Newcastle’s asking price. Based on his form during his run in the side, there is every chance that that fee will prove to be a bargain in the coming years as he continues to develop.
But it is still a gamble to pay that kind of price for a player who only made his Premier League debut on Boxing Day this past season and ended the campaign with nine top flight appearances under his belt.
