According to Bild, Newcastle United are keen on signing Nurnberg midfielder Patrick Erras this summer, with interest from a host of other clubs.

Newcastle will be keen on making new signings this summer, but recruitment will be the second priority behind getting manager Rafael Benitez signed up for next season.

Midfield is a particular area of concern though, with Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey both linked with exits this summer, and Mo Diame’s future still up in the air.

Benitez – if he stays – may well be looking for one or two midfielders this summer, despite seeing Sean Longstaff emerge as a top talent this season.

Now, Bild report that Newcastle are one of a host of clubs in England and Germany interested in signing Nurnberg giant Erras this summer.

Erras, who stands at a huge 6ft 5in tall, is out of contract in 2020, meaning he could be a bargain signing inside the final year of his Nurnberg contract.

Erras has started just seven league games this season though, so such major interest is something of a surprise, and Newcastle fans may be concerned about signing a player who hasn’t featured prominently for Nurnberg.

A strong and composed holding midfielder, Erras is an imposing figure who may well be yet another Benitez bargain after Martin Dubravka and Fabian Schar, but it’s not quite going to excite Newcastle fans like Miguel Almiron’s arrival did.
