According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle United are in the race to sign Lyon winger Bertrand Traore – and he’s interested in moving away.

It’s claimed that Traore is ‘listening to offers’ as he doesn’t want to be a backup player. The report states that a number of teams have asked for information about his situation in recent weeks.

Real Betis and Bayer Leverkusen are two of them, but it’s added that Newcastle want him too. The Magpies ‘may well take action’ having added Traore to their wish list.

The club’s seemingly imminent takeover from the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers means that Newcastle should have huge riches this summer.

Primarily a right winger, Traore can also play up front. He’s quick and skilful, whilst he also possesses a dangerous left foot to cause havoc cutting inside.

The 24-year-old hit 29 goals in his first two seasons with Lyon, but has fallen down the pecking order under Rudi Garcia. He has notched just four goals and five assists this season.

Formerly of Chelsea, Traore never really received the opportunity to shine in England. The Burkina Faso international may now feel that it’s time to come back to the Premier League for another crack.

Newcastle would be able to deploy him on the right flank, giving him consistent playing time and a healthy contract – if this takeover goes through.

The competition for his signature means Newcastle face a battle, and it’s tough to know who exactly is driving their interest right now, but Traore is a name to keep an eye on.
