Newcastle United are reportedly challenging Leicester City for Torino’s Lorenzo Di Silvestri.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle United are interested in landing Torino defender Lorenzo Di Silvestri, with Leicester City also thought to be keen.

The Magpies are planning for a second season back in the Premier League after Rafael Benitez managed to keep the club in the top flight despite a lack of top quality in the squad.

Benitez will now need to plan for next season, and he may well be pursuing defensive reinforcements. Jesus Gamez and Massadio Haidara are both leaving this summer, and a defender who can play at left back and right back may be ideal for depth.

Tuttomercatoweb now report that Newcastle are keen on Torino full back Lorenzo Di Silvestri, but face competition from Premier League rivals Leicester City.

Di Silvestri, 29, has been a regular in Italian football over the last 12 years, turning out for Lazio, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and now Torino, making 56 appearances for the club following a 2016 move.

Primarily a right back but also capable of playing at left back, Di Silvestri has earned six caps for Italy and may be seen as a veteran presence who can cover for DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett in the Newcastle defence.

Intriguingly, Goal reported in 2015 that Napoli – then managed by Magpies boss Benitez – wanted to sign Di Silvestri after a lengthy pursuit, but the Spanird moved on to Real Madrid just days later, and Benitez could now finally land the full back this summer.
