Newcastle United are considering a summer move for Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope, according to reports.

According to a report from The Sun, Newcastle are considering making a move for Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope during the summer after his excellent run of form in the side.

Pope went into this season having predominantly played most of his football in the lower leagues – he had still been awaiting his Premier League debut and had only made 33 of his 110 league appearances in the Championship – but was given an opportunity when Tom Heaton dislocated his shoulder in September.

Given Pope’s lack of experience and Heaton’s importance to the team, many Clarets fans would have been forgiven for expecting their form to take quite the nosedive. But the 25-year-old has been fantastic between the sticks.

It is fair to say that Sean Dyche will now have a tricky decision to make when Heaton is back fully fit, and The Sun reports that Newcastle are keeping a very keen eye on developments.

Should Pope return to the bench when Heaton is back playing, The Sun suggests that the Magpies will look to make a move for the former Charlton Athletic stopper at the end of the campaign.

Smart move from Newcastle?

With the Daily Mirror recently reporting that making Martin Dubravka’s loan deal permanent will cost Newcastle just £4 million, it is slightly surprising that they are considering other options as the Slovakian was fantastic on his Magpies debut.

If Dubravka continues to perform as well as that for the duration of his loan spell, it surely becomes a no-brainer for Newcastle to sign him permanently in the summer.

What signing Dubravka would mean for their interest in Pope is unclear, but if the latter does return to being second choice at Turf Moor, it seems unlikely that he will be overly keen on a move to St James’ Park if the path to the first-team is just as congested.
