According to a report from The Sun, Newcastle fans should not expect their club to make any surprise signings before Rafa Benitez’s future at St James’ Park is resolved.

The Sun reports that the Magpies want Benitez tied down to a new deal and talks have been held. And while Benitez seems ready to commit his future to Newcastle, he wants assurances regarding the club’s ambition following their hugely impressive 10th place finish in their first season back in the Premier League.

And it appears that Newcastle have all the incentive they could need to provide Benitez with the guarantees that he is looking for, as The Sun suggests that it is only after the Spaniard’s future is sorted that the club will switch their attention to their potential summer signings.

The Sun adds that Martin Dubravka’s loan deal is set to be made into a £4 million permanent move, but it appears that the supporters should not expect much else happening while there is a question mark lingering over Benitez’s situation.

Given the decision to hold off on transfer dealings for the time-being, it would certainly appear to be in everyone’s best interests to reach an agreement as quickly as possible.

Newcastle did finish in the top-half this past season, but there were periods in the campaign when it looked entirely possible that their return to the Premier League may have turned into a brief one. So they must not get carried away and think that they can take their foot off the pedal this summer.

Seeing previously-established sides like West Brom, Stoke and Swansea going down proves that allowing any complacency to creep in could have a devastating impact on the side’s fortunes.
