Newcastle United are reportedly keen on Benfica’s Andreas Samaris.
According to The Mirror, Newcastle United are back in the hunt for Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris – and could sign him on the cheap.
The Magpies are set to be in the market for reinforcements during the January transfer window, with some mixed form of late.
Fans are keen to see attacking additions arrive, especially Atlanta United’s exciting playmaker Miguel Almiron, but another holding midfielder may be on the radar.
Mohamed Diame and Ki Sung-yueng have featured of late whilst Jonjo Shelvey has sat on the sidelines, and a new signing may allow wantaway Isaac Hayden to finally leave.
Now, The Mirror claim that Benitez wants to bring Benfica’s Samaris to St James’ Park in January, in the belief that a cheap deal can be struck.
It’s claimed that Benitez wanted Samaris over the summer, but Newcastle wouldn’t pay the £10million asking price on his head.
However, Samaris is out of contract in the summer, and hopes to be let go for free in January or in a knockdown deal, giving Newcastle hope that he will finally head to Tyneside.
The 29-year-old anchor man has made nearly 150 appearances for Benfica since a 2014 move from Olympiakos, whilst he also has 33 caps for Greece, and provides major experience and a physical presence in midfield.
