Newcastle United are reportedly looking to sign Josef Martinez.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United are interested in signing Atlanta United striker Josef Martinez as they look to reunite him with Miguel Almiron.
Martinez, 26, has been a goal machine for Atlanta United, scoring 31 goals in 34 games in the 2019 MLS season, having hit 35 goals in 39 games last season.
Unsurprisingly, the former Torino striker is attracting interest, and it’s believed that Newcastle head of recruitment Steve Nickson is keeping tabs on him having established good links in Major League Soccer.
It’s noted that Everton have also been interested in Martinez, but Newcastle have put him on a list of potential January transfer targets in an effort to boost Steve Bruce’s attack.
Newcastle did splash out for a big centre forward in Joelinton, but adding a speedy, mobile goalscorer like Martinez could give the Magpies more cutting edge.
The move may also help solve the headache of Miguel Almiron. The £20million January signing (BBC) from Atlanta United has failed to impress this season, but has a great connection with Martinez having played together in the States.
Reuniting them could help get the best out of Almiron, and having them buzzing around Joelinton may just make Steve Bruce’s side much more exciting and productive in the final third.
Martinez is also the strike partner of former Newcastle striker Salomon Rondon with Venezuela, scoring 12 times in 51 caps, and he may end up emulating his international teammate by heading to St James’ Park.
