Newcastle United are interested in signing an Arsenal ‘wonderkid’, according to a report.
Eighteen-year-old Alfie Matthews looks set to leave the North London club.
On Thursday, Matthews made several Instagram posts in which he teased of a ‘big move’ away from Arsenal in the caption.
And according to Football London, Newcastle are interested in the highly-rated teenager.
Matthews is yet to make a senior debut for the Gunners but in March, before the global health crisis caused a suspension of football, Mikel Arteta promoted him to the club’s senior training sessions.
The report from Football London adds that he would be going into the Magpies’ youth ranks and not join as a senior player.
If this is the ‘big move’ that Matthews has been hinting at then you could argue it isn’t the best career switch.
That’s because the St James’s Park club are waiting to see if a £300 million takeover by Saudi Public Investment Fund gets a greenlight from the Premier League.
If it does, Newcastle will be 80 percent owned by a group with a wealth of £260 billion and the North East could become a hot bed for superstars over the coming years, making it that bit harder for Matthews and other young talents to progress into the first team.
