Newcastle United are said to be interested in Peterborough United winger Siriki Dembele by the Chronicle.
Newcastle boss Steve Bruce was spotted at Posh’s game this weekend, as they were beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra.
It is thought the reason for his visit was to get a closer eye on Dembele, who has taken League One by storm so far this term.
The Newcastle boss may actually have not have been particularly impressed by what he saw on the day though.
Dembele had arguably his worst performance of the season, with the Crewe defence marshalling him expertly, as Darren Ferguson’s league leaders fell to a deserved defeat.
Dembele certainly merits the attention he is getting from higher placed clubs, however, as he has been simply brilliant since the turn of the year.
The young attacker has thrived since Posh switched to a 5-3-2 formation, which saw him play up-front last term.
“Siriki suffered because we changed to a system that didn’t use wingers and the lads flew up the league. When Siriki did get in he then got injured and then he had a suspension,” Posh boss Ferguson said back in February to the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.
“But the boy has been absolutely outstanding since realising he can play as a central striker.”
Dembele has actually played out wide and up-front this term, and his form has been one of the major reasons why Peterborough have started the season so well.
Dembele even notched his first EFL hat-trick recently, as Posh crushed Shrewsbury Town 5-1.
If he was to move to Newcastle he would be making a big step up.
However, his quick feet make him a huge danger, and he would have the perfect player to learn off in Allan Saint-Maximin at St. James’ Park.
