Newcastle United have reportedly joined the race for Bayer Leverkusen talent and recent Bundesliga record-breaker Florian Wirtz.

According to Sport Bild, the Magpies sent scouts to watch Leverkusen’s league fixture against FC Koln on Sunday. As per the report, Leverkusen are not open on selling the teenage talent until at least 2023.

Moreover, even then Leverkusen will only think about selling Wirtz for a fee of €100m (£84m). Wirtz is regarded as one of Germany’s most exciting prospects, with the 18-year-old this season already breaking a quite remarkable record.

The midfielder, who tends to play higher up the pitch, became the youngest player in Bundesliga history to score ten goals in the league. In total, Wirtz has six goals and six assists in all competitions this season.

Indeed, Newcastle aren’t the only club keen on signing Wirtz. Reports have previously linked Arsenal and Liverpool to the 18-year-old talent. Whilst Bayern Munich are of course keeping tabs on the Germany international.

With Newcastle recently being taken over by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, paying a transfer fee will be no problem for the northeast club. Moreover, Leverkusen’s 2023 deadline gives the Premier League side time to build their foundations as an attractive club.

The Toon will no doubt be in a much better place in two years compared to where they currently find themselves. And this time will give Newcastle the perfect opportunity to transform themselves into a club that Wirtz will want to play for.

Indeed, the plan for Newcastle now must be to build a solid Premier League team before moving into big-name signings. And 2023 could be the year the Toon go all out on someone like Wirtz, who has all the signs of being a generational talent.
