Newcastle United are interested in signing Kelechi Iheanacho from Premier League rivals Leicester City in the summer transfer window, according to AllNigeriaSoccer.
Cast your mind back to 2015 and, while a fresh-faced teenager by the name of Marcus Rashford was making waves under Louis van Gaal at Manchester United, another exciting young striker was scoring goals for fun on the other side of the city.
But while Iheanacho never quite lived up to such lofty expectations at City, sold to Leicester once Pep Guardiola replaced Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad, he is finally starting to get his career back on track after a couple of lean years in Foxes blue.
Iheanacho has scored ten times in just 24 matches under Brendan Rodgers this season.
But, with just 11 of his Premier League appearances coming from the start, the 23-year-old Nigerian might be tempted by the chance to swap his supporting role at Leicester to be the star man at St James’ Park.
Iheanacho is far from the finished product but it speaks volumes about the forwards currently at Newcastle’s disposal that he would feel like an immediate upgrade on Joelinton, Dwight Gayle and Andy Carroll.
The 6ft 1ins frontman is also one of the most effective impact substitutes in the Premier League and, on paper at least, he would give an often toothless Newcastle side a viable plan B.
Interestingly, Iheanacho is represented by the same Stellar Group who count Ciaran Clark, Jonjoe Shelvey, Javi Manquillo and Andy Carroll among their expansive array of clients.
