Newcastle United are looking into a deal for Ligue 1 starlet Christopher Wooh while finalising the signing of Sevilla star Diego Carlos, as reported by L’Equipe.
Rapidly-rising RC Lens are finding out the hard way that success brings it’s own set of challenges.
Lens earned promotion from Ligue 2 less than two years ago, securing their return to the top flight. They sent shockwaves through French football by securing a seventh-placed finish in their first season back in the big time.
Now sixth in the table, within touching distance of second-place Nice, do not rule out this coupon-busting, eternally-overachieving side going one step closer in 2021/22.
Champions League qualification anyone?
The downside is that, for Lens, retaining the services of their key players is becoming more and more difficult.
Star centre-back Loic Bade joined Ligue 1 rivals Rennes last summer.
Jonathan Clauss, Cheick Doucoure, Ignatius Ganago, Facundo Medina, Gael Kakuta and Captain Fantastic Seko Fofana – arguably the most in-form midfielder in the league – have been linked with Premier League clubs in recent months.
Now, it’s Christopher Wooh’s turn.
Will Christopher Wooh join Diego Carlos at Newcastle?
According to L’Equipe, newly-minted Newcastle are eyeing up a 20-year-old centre-half who only joined Lens in July, from Nancy.
Elegant, graceful and blessed with a fine passing range, Wooh makes defending look like an art form. Fitting, really, when you consider he was born in Louvres.

“Christopher is an intelligent player,” says Lens coach Franck Haise (Le11). “He has real potential for Ligue 1. I have complete confidence in him.”
The report adds that Wooh, one for the future rather than someone capable of making an immediate impact in Eddie Howe’s side, remains a target regardless of Diego Carlos’ impending £30 million to St James’ Park (The Guardian).
So that’s Chris Wood and now Chris Wooh. One wonders whether Newcastle will come calling for former world-record-holding Olympic swimming legend Christopher Woo between now and February 1.
Carlos is expected to earn £80,000-a-week at Newcastle, doubling his Sevilla pay-packet. He will become the club’s third January signing, after Wood and Kieran Trippier.
