Newcastle United have been linked with Bristol City defender Adam Webster.
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle United are one of a host of clubs interested in signing Bristol City defender Adam Webster – but would have to pay £12m.
Webster, 24, starred for Ipswich Town before heading to Bristol City last summer, joining as a replacement for Middlesbrought’s Aden Flint in a move which the Robins will feel they benefited from.
The 6ft 3in centre back was a rock in the heart of the Bristol City defence, and it’s no great surprise that he’s attracting major Premier League interest, just like defensive teammate Lloyd Kelly was before joining Bournemouth.
It’s believed that the likes of Newcastle United, Burnley, Leicester City, Southampton and Watford are all keen on Webster, though Bristol City would demand £12million – almost four times what they paid a year ago.
The Magpies can’t really make signings whilst the uncertainty surrounding Rafael Benitez’s future goes on, and that means that they’ve already missed out on Brazilian striker Wesley.
Newcastle may well have an interest in a host of players, but are just keeping them on a list for now, for when Benitez’s future is resolved one way or another.
Do Newcastle need another defender? Well, not really. They have four strong centre backs already in Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune, Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez, so adding another would be a surprise.
That is, unless one may be going. Schar has attracted interest after a strong first season in the Premier League, whilst experienced duo Lejeune or Fernandez could even be on the chopping block for a younger defender in Webster, who should be a name for Magpies fans to keep an eye on.
