According to the Express and Star, Newcastle United will no longer by able to offer Dwight Gayle to West Bromwich Albion in a straight swap for Salomon Rondon.

West Brom have decided against signing Gayle from Newcastle, as they cannot afford his wage demands.

Gayle moved to West Brom on loan from Newcastle last summer, with Rondon heading in the other direction.

The deal worked out brilliantly for both clubs, with Rondon and Gayle both winning the Player of the Season awards at their temporary clubs.

Newcastle had potentially hoped to do a trade deal with West Brom by effectively swapping the two strikers, but that is no longer possible.

If Newcastle are to sign Rondon now they will have to pay his £16.5 million release clause, which they have been reluctant to do.

Newcastle’s chances of landing Rondon could now be very slim, with interest mounting in the Venezuelan striker from other sides, as reported by the Chronicle.
