Newcastle United have missed their chance to sign the West Bromwich Albion striker on the cheap.
West Bromwich Albion are likely to ask for around £25 million for Salomon Rondon after the Newcastle United target’s buy-out clause expired, according to the Daily Mirror (August 2nd, live blog entry 16:03).
Rondon had been able to leave West Brom for any club offering £16.5 million until the start of August, but the Baggies are no longer under any obligation to sell at that price.
The Daily Mirror speculates their new demands could prove too pricey for Newcastle, whose manager Rafa Benitez has been visibly frustrated by his side’s transfer business.
And the newspaper adds the Magpies’s pussyfooting around a deal for Rondon is set to enrage Benitez even further.
Thursday’s £9.5 million signing of Yoshinori Muto has restored Newcastle’s striker tally to five after Aleksandar Mitrovic’s sale to Fulham.
Incidentally, one of those, Dwight Gayle, has been linked with a move to West Brom as part of the deal for Rondon.
