According to Modern Ghana, Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu will play no further part in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations after being ruled out with a ‘severe muscle’ problem.

The jet-heeled Magpies star came off injured after 15 minutes of Ghana’s 0-0 draw with Cameroon this past weekend.

And the results of his scan have determined that the Newcastle ace, signed by ex-manager Rafael Benitez, suffered a serious muscle tear this past weekend.

The report from Modern Ghana adds that the 27-year-old is set to miss ‘weeks’ but no specific time-frame is mentioned.

The St James’s Park club kick off their Premier League campaign by welcoming Arsenal to the North-East on August 11 – six weeks from now.

Fifteen of Atsu’s 28 Premier League appearances last term were starts but, with Benitez having left the club last week and devastating fans in the process, nobody is safe on Tyneside.

The problem for Atsu – who cost £6.5 million [The Chronicle] – is that each and every single one of his Newcastle team-mates will be desperate to make a good impression to the new manager – whoever that is – and the former Chelsea man may not be in a position to do that if he’s sidelined.
