The Newcastle United hitman is linked with a move to Turkey – should he take it?

According to Turkish outlet Spor.Mynet, Fenerbahce are interested in signing Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer.

The 22-year-old helped Newcastle win promotion back to the Premier League last season, though he played second fiddle behind Dwight Gayle for much of it.

Mitrovic, who started only 11 Championship matches, is not expected to be Rafael Benitez’s go-to-guy for goals next season either and it remains to be seen what role the Spanish manager envisages for the fiery Serbian hitman.

With Chelsea starlet Tammy Abraham set to join the Magpies on loan (via The Telegraph), the former Anderlecht man is bound to be pushed further down the pecking order in the North East.

And Sport.Mynet reports that Fenerbahce would be willing to offer him an escape route.

The report goes on to claim that although Mitrovic – who has scored 13 times in 59 Premier League and Championship outings – did not fulfill expectations in front of goal, the Turkish giants believe he has “huge potential” to do so eventually.

Mitrovic is a fine talent but it remains to be seen whether or not he is the 25-goal-a-season striker that Newcastle thought they were getting two years ago.
