Newcastle United are hoping to sign Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge on loan in January.
Bolstering the attacking department is Rafael Benitez’s top priority, and he feels that Sturridge’s goal scoring pedigree can keep the club in the Premier League.
The Magpies have been linked with a move for Nicolai Jorgensen, but Benitez has turned to Sturridge after Newcastle failed to meet Feyenoord’s £20 million valuation.
Newcastle submitted bids in the region of £15 million, but the Dutch club weren’t willing to lower their asking price.
The Times claims that the final details of the loan switch are being fleshed out. Sturridge is keen to stay in England as he looks to reignite his career.
The Magpies will have to pay a loan fee of £1.5 million, and cover the player’s 120k-per-week wages for the rest of the season.
Sturridge has dropped down the pecking order at Liverpool, and had the chance to join Inter Milan this month. He will be hoping to rediscover his swagger at the Tynseside club.
When fit, Sturridge is one of the best forwards in England, and he would be a welcome addition to the side that have scored just 22 goals in 24 league games this season.
