West Ham United eventually snapped up the Leeds United player.
Leeds United lost one of their top young talents this month with Sam Byram finalising a long protracted move to West Ham United.
The right-back, who has played most of his recent football from the wing, was out of contract in the summer and decided to take the Premier League plunge now – with Leeds cashing in rather than risk a compensation fee at tribunal.
Prior to heading to West Ham he was linked with an abundance of other Premier League clubs – including the likes of Everton and Newcastle United.
A report yesterday has now highlighted the level of Newcastle’s interest.
The Chronicle is reporting that the Newcastle recruitment board recommended a deal be brokered for Byram but that no bid was ever made. The Premier League club made initial enquiries but then decided they would not be following up with a bid.
This is no consolation to Leeds fans, who still lost one of their star players. Newcastle United in the meanwhile have made some great moves this month – with Jonjo Shelvey, Henri Saivet and Andros Townsend all arriving.
They will hope however that they do not end up regretting deciding not to make a move for the player.
