According to the Shields Gazette, Newcastle United are interested in raiding RB Leipzig for head of recruitment Paul Mitchell.
Newcastle’s takeover hasn’t actually gone through yet, but it does now seem close. The Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers look set to finally seal their deal – and big plans would begin.
Big-name managers and players have been linked with moves to Tyneside, and so have potential transfer gurus to help Newcastle spark their new era.
Luis Campos has been linked with a move, but this new report now states that Newcastle hold an interest in landing Mitchell.
The RB Leipzig recruitment chief has built up a strong reputation in recent times. He made his name with Southampton before following Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham, where he continued his fine work.
Mitchell is now with RB Leipzig, who have become one of the finest teams at Europe when it comes to bringing in exciting young players and selling them on.
A move for Mitchell would raise questions about Pochettino. Sky Sports recently noted that Pochettino is the top managerial target for Newcastle’s new owners as they eye a big name.
Pochettino worked closely with Mitchell at Southampton and Spurs, but their relationship took a hit when Mitchell handed in his notice at Tottenham; Pochettino admitted that he was ‘very disappointed’ to see Mitchell go.
Landing both would be a huge coup for Newcastle given their respective reputations, but much will depend on whether they can work together again.
