Newcastle United are struggling in the Premier League at the moment.
Newcastle United want manager Rafael Benitez to extend his current contract, according to The Times.
As reported by The Times, Benitez’s current deal with Newcastle runs until the summer of 2019.
The Magpies’ managing director, Lee Charnley has reportedly told the former Liverpool and Chelsea boss that they want to open discussions with him over a new contract.
The Times, though, has also claimed that Benitez will not hold any talks over his future until after the end of the January transfer window.
Benitez’s (reported) stance is understandable. After all, there is no need for the Spaniard to extend his contract given Newcastle’s situation at the moment.
Newcastle are struggling for survival in the Premier League at the moment and are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
The Magpies have not made any signing in the January transfer window so far, and one suspects that Benitez will not be happy if he is unable to bring in any new players for the second half of the season.
