Newcastle United have been linked with a move for the ex-Liverpool defender.

Fotomac have reported that Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez wants to re-sign Martin Skrtel this summer.

The Spanish manager brought Skrtel to Liverpool in 2008, with the Slovakian centre-back now with Fenerbahce.

But the Turkish giants could be forced to offload the 32-year-old this summer after breaching Financial Fair Play regulations.

Swansea City have already been linked by Fotomac, and the same outlet now claims that Newcastle could also throw their hat into the ring for the £4.5 million-rated star.

The Magpies have been heavily linked for centre-half Florian Lejuene in recent weeks but Mundo Deportivo reported on Thursday that Benitez has cooled his reported interest in the 26-year-old Frenchman.

If true then a move for Skrtel would certainly make sense. Newcastle need another central defender but, more importantly, the right central defender.

Skrtel boasts eight years of Premier League experience and would be an ideal signing to ease their transition back to life in the top flight, having won promotion from the Championship last season.
