Newcastle United tried to sell Dwight Gayle in the summer transfer window, according to the Daily Star.

Gayle finished as top scorer for Newcastle last season in the Championship, but he has struggled for a starting spot upon their promotion to the Premier League.

The 26-year-old is yet to score in 204 minutes of top flight football, starting just twice – a far cry from his prolific 2016/17 season in which he netted 23 goals in 26 starts.

The Star report Newcastle were keen to cash in on Gayle, but the only serious bid came from Fulham, and fell short of their £12 million valuation.

It is claimed that Newcastle will try again to sell Gayle along with Aleksandr Mitrovic in January – but only if they can bring in one other striker of their own.

Gayle like any other player will want to play top flight football, but he is not making a compelling case for himself at present with his current opportunities.

One avenue is a potential return to former club Crystal Palace who need a striker, otherwise he could need to drop down a division to get games.

He has two-and-a-half months to show Newcastle they would be making a mistake in selling him.
