Newcastle United are on the hunt for new additions, as they look to strengthen their push for promotion. Everton’s James McCarthy is in their sights.

According to a report in the Chronicle, Rafael Benitez is still confident of completing two transfers at Newcastle United in January.

It was widely expected that Newcastle would invest in their first team at the start of the month, but progress has been slow.

The Magpies have targeted a number of players, but Benitez does not seem to have a big budget to spend.

Newcastle have, instead, largely gone after loan deals – with Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend and Swansea City’s Modou Barrow two of the players linked.

Newcastle have been unable to get a deal for either over the line yet, but Benitez is said to be confident that the Tynesiders will welcome some fresh faces before the window closes.

Newcastle are believed to be targeting a winger and a central midfielder, as Benitez looks to bolster his options.

Everton midfielder James McCarthy is on Benitez’s wishlist, and the Republic of Ireland international is thought to be keen on a move to St. James’ Park.

McCarthy reportedly does not mind taking a drop to the Championship, as he is enthused about the prospect of playing for Newcastle.

The Magpies are currently in second place in the Championship table, and are next in action at the weekend when they take on Oxford United in the FA Cup.
