Newcastle United are set to sign Swansea City’s Modou Barrow on loan until the end of the season.

According to a report in the Chronicle, Newcastle United are set to announce the signing of Modou Barrow from Swansea City in the next few days.

Rafael Benitez had spoken of his desire to complete Newcastle’s first signing of the January transfer window, and it seems that the Spanish boss is set to get his wish.

Newcastle are in advanced talks with Swansea over the signing of Barrow, with the deal expected to go through imminently.

Barrow has struggled to hold down a first team place at the Liberty Stadium this season, and new Swansea boss Paul Clement reportedly feels that the Gambian is not part of his first-team plans.

Newcastle are now keen to take Barrow on loan, with a view to making the transfer permanent in the summer.

The Magpies are likely to only sanction loan deals in the January window, as they are keen not to overspend without top level football.

Newcastle had been interested in signing Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend, but Barrow’s arrival is likely to end their interest in the England international.

Newcastle are currently leading the way in the Championship table, with their next match coming against Oxford United in the FA Cup.
