Newcastle United are reportedly tracking teenage Serbian centre-back Nikola Milenkovic with a view to making a January move, according to the Chronicle.

The Magpies were one of the most active clubs in England during the summer transfer window, with Rafa Benitez bringing in no fewer than 12 new first-team players following the club’s relegation.

Those arrivals included numerous defensive reinforcements in the form of centre-backs Grant Hanley and Ciaran Clark and full-backs Achraf Lazaar, Jesus Gamez, DeAndre Yedlin, and defensive midfielder and some-time centre-back Isaac Hayden.

However, it appears as though Benitez may already be making plans to further strengthen his backline in the January market.

The Chronicle, referring to unidentified Serbian sources, claims that Newcastle have been scouting teenage Partizan Belgrade centre-back Milenkovic.

The six-foot-four-inch prodigy only turned 19 years old earlier this week, but is already a full Serbia international and is thought to be valued at around £3 million by Partizan.

The paper also suggests that the Magpies are likely to face stiff competition from European sides such as Ajax and Anderlecht if they make a solid move for the starlet in the winter.

The Magpies have started the Championship season well, with Saturday’s victory over Brentford their eighth of the campaign in just their 12th league game.
