The Spanish boss wants to ensure that Newcastle have a new attacking midfielder signed up in January, who he can partner with Dwight Gayle.
Benitez is said to be assessing the talent in Premier League squads, with Newcastle potentially ready to spend if the right target becomes available.
The Chronicle believes that Newcastle may have a ‘high profile’ target lined up, as Benitez looks to ensure that his side get promoted.
Newcastle currently top the Championship table, and they have established a nine point lead over third placed Reading.
