The Newcastle United goalkeeper is reportedly wanted by Middlesbrough, as well as Reading.

Newcastle United have rejected a £5 million bid for goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Middlesbrough, The Sun reports.

It is claimed the Magpies want more money for Darlow – despite informing the 26-year-old he can leave St James’ Park this summer.

And Middlesbrough must now return with an improved offer if they are to prise their alleged ‘number one target’ from north east rivals Newcastle.

Boro are having little luck in their search for a new man between the sticks. After allowing Victor Valdes and Brad Guzan to quit the Riverside Stadium earlier this summer – leaving Dimi Konstantopoulos and Connor Ripley are their only senior options – the Teessiders are also said to have failed in their attempt to sign Sheffield Wednesday’s Keiren Westwood.

Should Garry Monk decide to pursue his interest in Darlow, he could face competition from Championship rivals Reading, whose interest in the Newcastle player was confirmed by manager Jaap Stam this week [Reading Chronicle].

Newcastle are believed to want to recruit a new number one this summer, despite Darlow’s impressive displays en route to promotion last season.

Should Middlesbrough up their bid for the Newcastle United ‘keeper?
