Newcastle United have only been able to bring in two new players so far this summer.

According to a report on the Northern Echo, Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is desperate for new additions but problems continue for the North East side.

Newcastle are known to want to strengthen their first-team squad this summer, following promotion to the Premier League.

However, Newcastle have so far been able to bring in just two players – with their pre-season training now underway.

Christian Atsu has returned to Newcastle, while Florian Lejeune has signed up.

Newcastle are working on a deal to sign Norwich City’s Jacob Murphy, but they have very few irons in the fire.

The Magpies have an interest in a range of players, but any new transfer is still a sizeable way off.

It means that Newcastle now face a race against time to force additions over the line before the new season starts.

Benitez’s side begin their campaign with a match against Tottenham Hotspur on 13th August.
