Newcastle are competing to sign Orestis Karnezis from Udinese.
Karnezis, 32, plays for Udinese and has been capped 42 times by Greece.
Despite Newcastle’s offer, they could lose out on the veteran to Rafa Benitez’s former club Napoli.
It is claimed that Napoli are Karnezis’s first choice, although their plans are unclear as they are also keen on Real Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.
Napoli are planning for the potential exit of Pepe Reina, who played under Benitez at Liverpool and the Italian side.
Newcastle have been frustrated in their attempts to sign a new goalkeeper all summer, with target Willy Caballero deciding to move to Chelsea where he will play a back-up role.
Karnezis has played more than 100 games over the past three seasons for Udinese and won the Greek Super League with Panathaniakos in 2009/10/
