Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has conceded defeat in the battle to sign Fulham’s Tom Cairney.

Newcastle failed to bring Cairney in at that time, but they have retained an interest in him ever since.
With Fulham relegated there was a hope that the 28-year-old may be obtainable this summer.
Rafael Benitez would have liked to add Cairney to his squad at St. James’ Park for next term.

However, Cairney has penned a new long-term contract at Fulham and Newcastle are now ready to walk away.
If Cairney sees out his contract at Fulham he will be in his 30’s by the time it expires.
And Newcastle are now looking at alternative targets for their midfield this summer.
