Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez looks set to lose out on target Oleksandr Zinchenko to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves are expected to land Zinchenko later today, but they could have faced competition from Newcastle for the youngster.
The Magpies were keen to take Zinchenko off City’s hands, but Mike Ashley didn’t give Benitez the funds to complete the deal.
Newcastle quickly discovered that they were working at a different level to Wolves in terms of finances, and couldn’t offer competition to the newly promoted side.
Newcastle have had to shop in the bargain basement this summer, with the Chronicle claiming that Cardiff City are the only other Premier League team with a similarly small budget as Benitez’s side.
Zinchenko could have bolstered Newcastle’s options in midfield for the upcoming campaign, but it seems that Benitez’s side will now have to look elsewhere, with the youngster likely to be in Wolves’ squad for the new term.
Newcastle are expected to do business today, but it could be more cheap deals or loan moves that are made.
