Newcastle United are keeping close eye on the Roma defender.

According to reports from Italian media outlet Tutto Mercato Web, Newcastle United are keeping close eye on AS Roma defender Emerson Palmieri.

Rafael Benitez, the Newcastle United manager, has stressed the importance of bolstering the squad in the January transfer window, and the Spaniard will be looking to bring in some quality players even though funds could be limited.

The Magpies boss is reportedly looking to sign a left-back, and that is why he has enquired about the Roma left-back.

The 23-year-old joined Roma in 2015 and has made 34 appearances for the club so far. This season, he has managed only 16 minutes of Serie A action, and clearly doesn’t have any future at the Italian club.

Premier League giants Liverpool have been recently linked with a move for the left-back, with Corriere Dello Sport reporting that the Reds are lining up a 22 million bid for the former Santos player.

The report claims that Liverpool have since cooled down their interest. However, with Newcastle seemingly interested, it remains to be seen whether they come up with a concrete offer.
