According to a report in the Chronicle, Newcastle United remain interested in signing Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace.

Townsend left Newcastle last summer, as he wasn’t prepared to stick around in the Championship.

However, the Magpies attempted to sign Townsend in January (Chronicle), and the winger was said to be keen to return to St. James’ Park.

In the end, no deal was completed – and Townsend’s form at Palace has improved considerably.

The former Tottenham winger was one of Palace’s main stars, as they retained their Premier League status.

Townsend looked likely to stay with the Eagles, after his late season revival, but Newcastle’s attention has been alerted by Sam Allardyce’s departure from Selhurst Park.

Allardyce announced his unexpected departure from Palace yesterday, and Newcastle are hopeful that Townsend may be open to a move now.

If Townsend was to move back to the Magpies it would go down well with supporters of the Tyneside club, as they have been asking for Benitez to make a move for the winger for some time (HITC).

Townsend scored four goals in 13 Premier League appearances for Newcastle during his first spell at the North East club.
