Newcastle United are said to have been tempted to offer Leeds United Dwight Gayle in a swap deal.

Clarke and Phillips are regarded as two of the most exciting talents at Leeds, and Newcastle would reportedly now like to bring them to Elland Road.
Newcastle had been tempted to offer Dwight Gayle to Leeds in a swap deal, as they looked to sign one of the talented youngsters, but that can no longer be arranged.
Leeds feel that Gayle’s wages are too expensive for them, with Newcastle needing to find other buyers for the clinical striker now.
Whether Newcastle will instead come back with a cash bid for either of the Leeds youngsters remains to be seen.

Mike Ashley is known to like to sign players with plenty of re-sale value and Phillips and Clarke would offer Newcastle that.
Phillips has played regularly for Leeds this term, and has been a key player in Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Clarke, meanwhile, has featured in more of a rotational role but he has shown real quality when offered opportunities.
