Newcastle United are reportedly among the teams interested in a Spanish teenager.

According to Estadio Deportivo, Newcastle United are interested in signing Sevilla youngster Alejandro Viedma this summer.

The Spain-based outlet reports that Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has been keeping an eye on the 19-year-old, whom the publication describes as a “fine midfielder”.

Viedma is out of contract with the Primera Division club next month and there are “many” clubs keen on the teenager, Estadio Deportivo adds.

The former Barcelona youth, who joined Sevilla’s ranks in 2016, earned some game time for the Rojiblancos’ B team in recent weeks, and started and finished the 2-1 defeat by Real Oviedo on Saturday.

Ominous for Newcastle?

If Newcastle are still interested in bargain basement signings then it might well indicate that Benitez faces another summer transfer window with limited funds.

The Magpies survived their relegation battle comfortably in the end, finishing 10th in the Premier League, but it wasn’t until the last couple of months where they staved off the threat of returning to the Championship.

So much of their problems last season stemmed from Benitez’s difficulties in getting players signed up last summer after seemingly being withheld funds by owner Mike Ashley.

And it could be ominous for the St James’s Park side if another difficult window is on the horizon for Benitez. Viedma might be a world beater down the line, but for now you would hope that the former Liverpool boss will be allowed to sign more tried-and-tested quality over the coming months.
