Newcastle United are interested in signing Sandro Tonali and have been discussing a move for the AC Milan star.

Sandro Tonali is one name being mentioned by Newcastle United as they consider midfield additions.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Tonali’s merits have been discussed by Newcastle.

The Magpies are looking for another midfielder this summer and there have been strong links to more attack-minded options.

James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai have been heavily linked with Newcastle, but the Magpies could go in another direction.

Bringing in a midfielder who has played in a sitting role may free up Bruno Guimaraes to go forward a little more.

That’s an idea Eddie Howe may run with and Tonali would certainly make sense in that regard.

Tonali has spent most of the season playing as a holding midfielder for AC Milan, helping them reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Two goals an 11 assists was a strong record for Tonali last season and Newcastle now appear to be interested.

Sandro Tonali deal seems unlikely amid Newcastle United FFP claims

We can understand why Newcastle would like Tonali.

Whilst there have been comparisons to Andrea Pirlo over the years, Tonali is maybe a little more all-action.

Tonali – hailed as an ‘incredible player’ by former Italy international Federico Balzaretti – is only 23 and still has enormous potential.

The problem will be the asking price.

Milan would demand a huge price tag for Tonali, especially given that he only signed a new deal until 2027 back in September.

The Telegraph report that Newcastle are being limited with their summer spending due to Financial Fair Play regulations.

That means splashing out on Tonali may be difficult for Newcastle even if they like him a lot.

We can’t see Tonali heading to Newcastle this summer, but he is a name to watch in the future as the Magpies attempt to grow and become an even bigger power in the transfer market.
