Report: Newcastle United have been watching £12m Southampton player

Newcastle United are now showing an interest in signing Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz this summer.

Carlos Alcaraz could leave Southampton after their relegation with Newcastle United showing an interest.

That is according to TalkSPORT, who report that Southampton are set to lose a number of players this summer.

Armel Bella-Kotchap, James Ward-Prowse and Kyle Walker-Peters are all expected to leave the Saints after relegation.

Then there is midfielder Alcaraz, who is thought to have been scouted closely by Newcastle ahead of a possible bid.

Alcaraz joined Southampton in January, arriving from Argentinian side Racing Club for a fee of around £12million.

The hope was that Alcaraz could help keep Southampton in the Premier League having shown major talent in Argentina.

Alcaraz showed promise with four goals and two assists in 18 appearances but it just wasn’t enough to prevent their relegation.

The 20-year-old particularly impressed with a superb goal and pinpoint assist against Arsenal in April.

Rarely do we see players immediately settle into Premier League life after arriving from South America.

Alcaraz showed potential though and it’s no surprise that top-flight clubs are now taking a very close look.

Hailed as ‘outstanding’ by former Racing boss Sebastian Beccacece, Alcaraz has shown the ability to play as a number 10 who breaks into the box to score goals.

That may appeal to Newcastle, who seem to be in the market for more attack-minded midfielders this summer.

Alcaraz may not be as rounded as other targets like James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai but he has real potential.

Southampton’s relegation leaves them at the mercy of the Premier League’s top clubs and Newcastle may look to benefit with a swoop for Alcaraz.
