Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on the signing of a central midfielder.
According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Newcastle United could make move for a central midfielder in the next few hours.
Newcastle have not signed one player in the January transfer window to date, but they do not play tonight – like many of their Championship rivals do.
Newcastle, therefore, have right up until the deadline to get transfers over the line, and they are expected to be active.
The Magpies are working on a deal to sign Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace, but the Mirror also suggest that they are going after a central midfielder.
Newcastle have been attempting to sign James McCarthy from Everton for much of the month so far, but they have given up with their attempts to bring the Republic of Ireland international to St. James’ Park.
Instead, Newcastle are looking elsewhere to bring an unnamed midfielder to Tyneside before tonight’s deadline.
Newcastle are also growing more confident about completing a deal for Palace’s Townsend, but time is running out for Rafael Benitez’s side.
