According to a report in the Chronicle, Newcastle United could make one of their first team centre-backs available for transfer this summer.

Newcastle are already set to offload Grant Hanley in the coming weeks, as the Scot has failed to break into their team.

However, Rafael Benitez realises that there is no time for sentiment at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle have ambitions of competing a high level in the Premier League, and Benitez plans to be ruthless.

The Spanish boss is targeting upgrading every area of his first-team squad, with centre-back seen to be a priority position.

Newcastle are looking to bring in a new central-defender, with Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala at the top of the Tynesiders’ wishlist.

At the moment Newcastle are trying to negotiate a price for Mangala, with the defender currently valued at £16 million (Chronicle), and Benitez is optimistic that a deal could be done.

And if Mangala does arrive, one of Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles or Chancel Mbemba will be put up for sale.

Clark, Lascelles and Mbemba all had runs in Newcastle’s first-team last season.

But Benitez does not his squad to become too bloated, and if Mangala arrives, one of the trio could be unexpectedly offloaded in the near future.
