Report: Newcastle United board not prepared to discuss new contracts with players

Newcastle United are reportedly waiting to tie down the future of Rafael Benitez before any of the players in their squad.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United’s board are blocking any player from discussing new contracts until Rafael Benitez’s future is sorted.

Newcastle striker Ayoze Perez is the latest player to be linked with a move away from St. James’ Park, with Napoli said to be interested in him.

There has been suggestions that the Magpies should offer Perez a new contract to try and calm speculation about him leaving.

However, Newcastle’s players apparently will not be allowed to discuss their current contractual situations until Benitez’s future is resolved.

The Spanish boss’s current deal at St. James’ Park is set to expire at the end of the season.

Benitez has suggested that he will consider staying with Newcastle, but he wants assurances before committing his future.

Benitez and Mike Ashley still haven’t been able to agree terms, and that is becoming a worry.

If Benitez does not stay with Newcastle that will be a major disappointment for the club, as he has done a wonderful job during his time on Tyneside.
