Newcastle United are looking for Rafael Benitez’s replacement, and reportedly approached Sam Allardyce.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Kevin Nolan almost landed the assistant managers job at Newcastle United.

The Mail claim that Newcastle approached Sam Allarydce about taking over from Rafael Benitez, but he turned down the job offer.

If Allardyce had accepted the job, he was reportedly set to take Kevin Nolan with him as part of his backroom staff.

Nolan recently caused great controversy at Newcastle, as he defended Mike Ashley on TalkSPORT.

Nolan told the radio station that ‘you couldn’t fault’ the job that Ashley had done as owner of Newcastle.

The former Newcastle midfielder has faced a backlash ever since he made those comments, and if he had now arrived with Allardyce it almost certainly wouldn’t have gone down well.

Newcastle are now attempting to appoint Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce instead of Allardyce, according to the Mail.

Bruce is also an unpopular potential appointment at St. James’ Park, with the atmosphere around Newcastle rapidly becoming toxic after Benitez’s departure.
