Newcastle United had been seemingly on the verge of appointing Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce.

According to Le Progres in France, Newcastle United are about to be sold to a billionaire from Dubai who wants to place Bruno Genesio in charge.

The shock report comes completely out of the blue, and conflicts almost everything in the English press, which has suggested that Steve Bruce’s arrival at St. James’ Park is imminent.

It would obviously be a huge development if Newcastle were to be taken over, but Magpies fans will be very tentative about these new claims.

Newcastle have seen many a takeover bid reported, but Mike Ashley has still not sold the club.

If Ashley was to depart then Newcastle fans would almost certainly be celebrating, but they may be pleased with the potential new owner’s plan to avoid Bruce too.

Bruce has resigned from his post at Sheffield Wednesday, and is widely expected to arrive on Tyneside soon, but the potential appointment is creating great anger among supporters.

There is a widespread feeling among supporters that Bruce simply is not good enough to take over from Rafael Benitez.

Genesio is less well known in English football, but he has done an excellent job in France with Lyon.

The 52-year-old manager has taken Lyon to second and third place finishes in France, while he also guided them to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

His appointment would surely be more welcomed than Bruce’s and while the report does need to be treated with caution, it does at least offer Newcastle fans some hope.
