According to The Telegraph (Transfer Live blog, 09:04am, Thursday, January 31, 2019), Bury have made an approach for Newcastle United youngster Matthew Longstaff.

It has been reported that the League Two club want to sign Longstaff on loan on January transfer deadline day until the end of the season.

Newcastle, though, according to the report, have turned down the approach from Bury for the 18-year-old defensive midfielder.

Good decision from Newcastle United?

Matthew Longstaff is the younger brother of 21-year-old midfielder Sean Longstaff, who is part of Rafael Benitez’s first team and is playing well at the moment.

The 18-year-old is unlikely to break into the Newcastle senior side anytime soon, and perhaps it would have made sense for the Magpies to send the teenager out on loan to Bury.

Bury are third in the League Two table at the moment with 53 points from 30 matches, six points behind leaders Lincoln City, who have played 29 games.

As for Newcastle, the Magpies are fighting for survival in the Premier League.
