According to Le10 Sport, Newcastle United are trailing Schalke in the race to sign Nice defender Malang Sarr this summer.
Sarr announced his intention to leave Nice last week. The defender has come up through the ranks with his hometown club, but has decided it’s time to move on.
His contract expires this summer, meaning clubs are queueing up to sign him on a free transfer. The report notes that Newcastle are in the mix, but so far Borussia Dortmund, Napoli and RB Leipzig.
Yet it’s Schalke allegedly leading the race. They’ve snubbed the chance to sign Barcelona loanee Jean-Clair Todibo permanently, and seemingly want Sarr to replace him.
Schalke are in pole position as things stand, but Sarr has plenty of time to make his decision given the confusion surrounding the English and German league seasons.
The 21-year-old already has more than 100 appearances for Nice, whilst he’s a French Under-21 regular too. Whilst predominantly a centre back, he can also play at left back.

Newcastle may have riches to come if their huge takeover goes through, but Sarr represents great value on a free transfer. That versatility would be ideal, especially given how they have played three and four-man back lines in the past.
If the takeover goes through, Newcastle may be able to throw money at Sarr in a bid to convince him. They better be quick though, as Schalke look to be making progress with their efforts.
