Newcastle United have reportedly put Nicolai Jorgensen at the top of their list of striker targets this summer.

Nicolai Jorgensen of Feyenoord celebrates after scoring during the Eredivisie match between Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar at The Kuip Stadium, Rotterdam on March 11, 2018.

According to a report from the Chronicle, Feyenoord will demand £21.9 million for Nicolai Jorgensen this summer and have informed Newcastle that they will only begin advanced discussions over the striker if the Magpies are serious about discussing a fee that is at least close to their asking price.

Jorgensen appears to have been linked with Newcastle for a while now, with the Chronicle reporting that they were prepared to break their club record to land him in January but stopped short of meeting his £20 million valuation.

Missing out on the Denmark international appeared to be a blessing in disguise at the time with the striker subsequently going almost two months without a goal for the Eredivisie side after a blistering start to the campaign. He did end the season with three goals in his last four appearances heading into the World Cup, and it appears that Benitez is keen to reignite his interest.

The Chronicle reports that Benitez has placed the 27-year-old at the top of a long list of striker targets this summer, and the Magpies seemingly now know what they must pay if they hope to get a deal across the line.

The Chronicle suggests that Feyenoord will be looking for £21.9 million and will only enter negotiations once Newcastle make it clear that they are serious about meeting the forward’s asking price, or at least getting close to it.

It is perhaps little surprise that the Dutch side are reportedly hesitant about speculation linking Jorgensen with St James’ Park. His form took a significant dip around the time that the Magpies move did not take place, and Feyenoord may argue that Newcastle’s inability to get a deal done had an impact on him.

But with Newcastle unwilling to pay £20 million during the previous window, it would perhaps be a surprise if they now decided to pay slightly more to meet Feyenoord’s demands, especially as it comes just after such a mixed few months for Jorgensen.
