The Chronicle claim that Newcastle United want to sign Manchester United star Jesse Lingard this month – but the Toon have been told it would take an ‘astronomical fee’ to sign him permanently this month.

Lingard, 29, remains on the sidelines at Manchester United despite the arrival of Ralf Rangnick as manager. The England international has started just two of 14 appearances in all competitions for the Old Trafford side.

Of course, it has been well-documented that Lingard has entered the final six months of his contract. Non-English sides can bring in Lingard on a pre-contract arrangement – but Newcastle would have to sign him for a fee.

That fee, though, is claimed would be an ‘astronomical’ one. The report states a loan is possible for Lingard too but again, it would take a ‘hefty’ loan fee for Newcastle to bring him in. Funds might be better elsewhere.

Newcastle want Lingard: How much should the Toon pay to sign him?

Lingard has the quality to keep Newcastle in the Premier League. In the middle of a relegation scrap, Newcastle need players that can thrive in England’s top tier and Lingard has shown he can do that.

On loan at West Ham last term, he scored nine goals and laid on five assists in 16 games. So, regardless of his contract situation, spending big on Lingard is easily worth remaining in the Premier League. Worth the risk.

Even if Lingard costs more than £10million, Newcastle have simply got to do it in the next few days. Ultimately, even a big fee is value for money.
