A report from Spain has indicated that Mikel Merino may be happy enough to leave Newcastle United.
According to a report from Spanish outlet AS, Mikel Merino would “be happy” to quit Newcastle United and return to Spain, amid speculation about a move to Real Betis.
Newcastle signed the Spanish midfielder in a permanent deal in October, having initially arrived on a season-long loan from Borussia Dortmund last summer.
Despite a fantastic start, the 21-year-old majorly struggled for first-team football under Magpies boss Rafael Benitez during the second half of the season, after returning from a back injury.
Speculation about a return to Spain has never been too far from the Osasuna starlet and, according to AS, Newcastle are willing to negotiate with Real Betis.
The report from Spain adds that Merino, a popular figure among United fans, would jump at the chance to leave St James’s Park if it meant increased playing time and a chance to restore his form.
Benitez shelled out £8 million to sign him permanently last year and it remains to be seen what Newcastle are looking for in regards to a selling price.
