Newcastle United will reportedly sit down with Sevilla defender Diego Carlos in the next 24 hours to hash out a deal to bring the Brazilian to the Premier League.

According to the Northern Echo, the Magpies will hold further talks with the Spanish club over a potential deal, with talks over the weekend suggesting that an agreement is possible this January.

As per the report, Newcastle have had numerous offers rejected for the 28-year-old Brazilian this January, with Marca reporting that Sevilla could accept a bid of up to €50m (£42m) for Carlos.

Indeed, despite being a regular for Sevilla and the La Liga side having a real shot at the title this season, Carlos is said to be keen on a move to Newcastle, with the prospect of a massive pay increase a tempting proposition for the centre-back.

Moreover, with Newcastle now out of the race to sign LOSC Lille star Sven Botman, Carlos looks to be the Toon’s number one defensive target this January, with Eddie Howe’s side also keen on signing a left-back and central midfielder.

With defence a key area for Newcastle this month, Carlos could be a solid addition to the squad and a player who can elevate the backline after months of disorganisation this season.

Carlos is taking huge career risk if he completes Newcastle move

A UEFA Europa League champion and Olympic gold medallist, Carlos has had an impressive career for both club and country, yet with the defender reportedly open to moving to Newcastle, the Brazilian is taking a risk on his career if he does move to the northeast.

After all, there is a strong chance that Newcastle could get relegated this season, and for Carlos, who only two years ago was a European champion with Sevilla, playing second-tier football at the peak of his career will be something very few would have foreseen.
